Study, Uchisar Baglari no border 500px

“Study, Apricot trees, Uçhisar, Turkey 2015″

The Cappadocian landscape in snow is a visually overwhelming experience. I confess that it took me many visits to get past the heady, drunken feeling of the visual beauty at every turn of the head.

This photograph was made at the foot of Uchisar, one of the largest fairy chimneys of the region. The light on that day was an extraordinary experience. The snow below, with the low clouds above softly dispersed a muted effulgence. Light slowly crept into cave entrances and windows, with surface textures revealed without any side lighting. The view before me was already reduced to a two dimensional image and the almost urban skyline quality all resonated strongly with my aesthetic sensibilities. Arguably anything can be photographed on Silver gelatin but prints from these kind of conditions really do excel as aesthetic objects.
